A practical guide to the main Nicosia vehicle crossing for Kyrenia, Bellapais Abbey and St. Hilarion Castle, including documents, insurance and route planning.

NORTH CYPRUS GUIDE Driving to Northern Cyprus via the Nicosia (Agios Dometios / Metehan) Checkpoint

Part of the Rentamania LTD Northern Cyprus Guide.

This article completes our Northern Cyprus guide series. In our previous articles, we explained how to visit North Nicosia on foot via the Ledra Street crossing, and how to drive into Northern Cyprus through the Pyla (Pergamos) checkpoint. This guide focuses on the main Nicosia border crossing, officially known as the Agios Dometios (Metehan) Checkpoint.

For most international visitors, this is the easiest and most convenient checkpoint for travelling to Northern Cyprus by rental car.

01 Why Choose the Nicosia (Agios Dometios) Checkpoint?

Agios Dometios is the main vehicle crossing in Nicosia and is a practical route if your destination is Kyrenia (Girne) or the Kyrenia mountain range. EU rules allow eligible EU citizens and third-country nationals to cross the Green Line at authorised crossing points, but every traveller must carry the documents required for their own nationality and immigration status.

This route combines perfectly with a visit to the island's divided capital. Many visitors spend several hours exploring both sides of the city before continuing their journey into Northern Cyprus by car.

02 Border Procedures

The procedure is generally the same as at the Pyla checkpoint. Before travelling, remember to:

  • carry your passport;
  • bring your driving licence;
  • purchase Northern Cyprus insurance immediately after crossing;
  • follow the instructions of border officials.

The process is usually straightforward and only takes a few minutes.

03 Insurance

You may take a Rentamania LTD vehicle across the Green Line only when your rental agreement explicitly permits it. Motor insurance issued in the Republic of Cyprus often does not provide cover in the north. Insurance for the north can normally be purchased at the Agios Dometios crossing, but availability, opening hours, price and cover can change. Confirm the current arrangements with our team before departure and do not continue without the required documents.

04 The Best Places to Visit

This route is perfect if you would like to visit the northern coast and some of Cyprus' most spectacular historical landmarks.

  • Kyrenia (Girne) — often considered one of the most beautiful towns on the island. Its picturesque harbour, traditional streets, cafés and waterfront restaurants make it one of Northern Cyprus' most popular destinations.
  • Kyrenia Castle — one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Cyprus, overlooking the harbour, with exhibitions covering centuries of Cypriot history.
  • Bellapais Abbey — a magnificent Gothic monastery in the hills above Kyrenia, with a peaceful atmosphere and panoramic mountain views.
  • St. Hilarion Castle — for many visitors the highlight of Northern Cyprus. Perched high in the Kyrenia Mountains, it offers breathtaking views across the Mediterranean, and many historians believe it inspired several famous fairy-tale castles.

05 Which Rental Car Is Best for This Trip?

This journey is considerably longer than a typical holiday drive around Paphos and includes motorway sections, hills and mountain roads. For this reason, we generally recommend one of our hybrid vehicles. Popular choices include the Nissan Note Hybrid, Toyota Vitz Hybrid, Honda Fit Hybrid, Toyota Sienta Hybrid (ideal for families) and Nissan Serena Hybrid (perfect for larger groups).

  • lower fuel consumption over long distances;
  • additional electric assistance when climbing hills;
  • regenerative braking on downhill sections, recovering energy and reducing wear on the conventional braking system;
  • quieter and more comfortable driving.

Although almost any properly maintained vehicle can complete this journey safely, hybrids generally provide the best balance of comfort, performance and efficiency.

06 Fuel and Payment Planning

Fuel prices, currencies accepted and payment arrangements can differ on the two sides of the Green Line and may change without notice. Start the trip with enough fuel for delays or a change of route, keep a suitable payment method with you and do not plan the journey around an assumed fuel-price saving.

07 Speed Cameras and Traffic Police

Northern Cyprus has a large number of automatic speed cameras. Many visitors receive speeding fines simply because they assume enforcement is similar to Southern Cyprus. In our experience, traffic police there generally enforce regulations more strictly than in many tourist areas of the south — officers are polite and professional, but less likely to overlook even minor violations. Please obey all speed limits, carry your driving licence and passport, and follow local road signs carefully.

08 Why Does Rentamania LTD Allow Travel to Northern Cyprus?

Some rental companies prohibit these trips altogether. Our philosophy is different. We believe customers should receive complete information and make their own informed decisions. Rather than banning travel, we explain border procedures, insurance requirements, possible risks and practical advice for a safe journey.

Transparency has always been one of the core principles of Rentamania LTD.
