Planning to rent a car in Cyprus from the UK? This guide explains everything British travellers need to know before booking, including driving licences, insurance, excess cover, security deposits, UK bank cards and what to expect when driving in Cyprus.
For many years, British tourists have been the largest group of visitors to Cyprus, and renting a car remains one of the best ways to explore the island at your own pace. At Rentamania LTD, we've welcomed thousands of customers from the UK over the years. Thanks to the many similarities between the UK and Cyprus, British drivers usually adapt immediately and enjoy a smooth rental experience from collection to return.
For British visitors, Cyprus is one of the easiest countries in Europe to drive in. This is largely because Cyprus was under British administration until 1960, and many aspects of its legal system, road network and traffic regulations were influenced by British standards.
Drivers travel on the left-hand side of the road, many road signs are in English, road markings are familiar, and driving rules feel very similar to those in the UK. For most British drivers, it only takes a few minutes behind the wheel before everything feels natural.
Yes. A valid UK driving licence is fully accepted for renting and driving a car in the Republic of Cyprus. In most cases, you do not need an International Driving Permit.
We recommend bringing:
One of the most common questions we receive from British customers concerns insurance. Many travellers purchase Excess Reimbursement Insurance from a UK insurance provider before travelling. This can be an excellent way to reduce your potential costs, but it's important to understand exactly what this type of policy covers.
An excess reimbursement policy does not replace the insurance included with your rental agreement. Instead, if you're responsible for damage covered under your rental terms, you would normally pay up to the excess amount — and then submit a claim to your UK insurance provider to recover those costs, subject to your policy conditions.
If you're unsure how your insurance works, our team will be happy to explain everything before you collect your vehicle.
Recently, we've noticed that some UK banks have introduced additional security measures that can occasionally affect card authorisations. Depending on your bank or card type, you may experience:
After your rental ends and the vehicle has been returned in good condition, Rentamania LTD immediately releases the security deposit authorisation. However, it's important to understand that the money is never held by Rentamania LTD itself. During a card authorisation, your bank temporarily reserves the funds on your account. Once we release the authorisation, your bank is responsible for making those funds available again.
Most banks complete this process within a few days. However, we've occasionally seen some UK banks take considerably longer, and in rare cases it may take up to two weeks. If necessary, we're happy to provide written confirmation that the authorisation has been released from our side, which you can send to your bank to help speed up the process.
Flying in from the UK? Book early for summer — we deliver to Paphos Airport and almost any hotel in the region.
After many years of serving British visitors, we've found that UK customers are generally very well prepared before they arrive. Many have already read the rental conditions, researched local driving rules, and understand how insurance works. They usually ask practical questions before collecting the vehicle, making the handover process quick, efficient and stress-free. This preparation helps ensure that the rental experience runs smoothly from start to finish.
Besides driving on the same side of the road, Cyprus offers several advantages for UK visitors. English is widely spoken throughout the island, road signs are easy to understand, fuel stations are straightforward to use, and distances between major attractions are relatively short.
Whether you're visiting beaches, mountain villages, archaeological sites or national parks, having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore Cyprus without relying on public transport or organised tours.
Yes. A valid UK driving licence is accepted throughout the Republic of Cyprus.
No, in most cases a standard UK driving licence is sufficient.
Not usually. Because Cyprus has left-hand traffic and many road rules are similar to those in the UK, most British drivers adapt very quickly.
No. It usually reimburses your excess after a claim but does not replace the insurance included with your rental agreement. Always read your policy carefully before travelling.
Rentamania LTD releases the authorisation immediately after your vehicle has been inspected and returned. The time it takes for the funds to become available again depends entirely on your bank. If required, we can provide confirmation that the authorisation has already been released.
In many cases, yes. However, some UK banks apply transaction or authorisation limits. We recommend checking with your bank before travelling.
Absolutely. Cyprus is one of the most convenient Mediterranean destinations for British drivers thanks to left-hand traffic, English road signs and familiar driving rules.
British visitors have been choosing Cyprus for their holidays for generations, and we're always delighted to welcome them. Whether you're planning your first visit or returning to one of your favourite destinations, the Rentamania LTD team is here to make your journey simple, transparent and enjoyable from the moment you arrive. We look forward to welcoming you to Cyprus and helping you explore the island with confidence.
