A true story from the Director of Rentamania LTD, Chloraka, Paphos — more than 10 years in the Cyprus car rental industry.
During more than ten years working in the Cyprus car rental industry, I've seen many unusual situations. One particular rental, however, completely changed the way our company operates. Looking back, I'm actually grateful it happened — because it made us significantly improve our procedures and, ultimately, better protect our customers.
One afternoon, a friendly lady arrived at our office with her two children. She asked for the simplest possible car with a manual gearbox. Unfortunately, like most rental companies in Cyprus today, all of our vehicles are automatic. We suggested a Nissan March — our smallest and most economical city car, ideal for exploring Paphos and the surrounding area.
She admitted she had never driven an automatic before and felt a little nervous. This is something we encounter quite often. So we did what we always do: we spent several minutes driving around our office together until she felt comfortable. Within five minutes she was driving confidently. Everything seemed perfectly normal.
Normally, when customers pay by credit card, we don't require a cash deposit. When customers use debit cards, we usually place a €300 pre-authorisation. In this case, however, the customer had neither. She only had €200 in cash.
She was polite, travelling with children, and explained that she only planned to drive around the local area. We decided to make an exception.
Looking back, that decision taught us one of the most valuable lessons in our company's history.
About an hour after she left, our GPS monitoring system started sending alerts. The vehicle had left the asphalt road. Not only that — it was travelling along the road to the Blue Lagoon through the Akamas Peninsula.
Among local rental companies, this route is often informally called "the Road of Death." Sadly, there have been serious accidents there over the years, including fatal ones. It is one of the main reasons virtually every rental company in Cyprus prohibits ordinary rental cars from using this road.
Watching the GPS trace in real time was genuinely stressful. Our smallest city car was driving on arguably the most dangerous road on the island.
Fortunately, she returned safely. Under our contract, the off-road penalty was €300. Because we had already made an exception by accepting only a €200 cash deposit, we decided not to charge anything beyond that amount.
Unfortunately, the conversation did not go well. The customer became extremely upset, demanded her money back, and called the police. For nearly an hour our office operations were interrupted while we waited for officers to arrive. After reviewing the contract, our safety briefing, and the circumstances, the police confirmed that we had acted within the agreement signed by the customer. The matter was closed.
Later, the customer left one of the most negative reviews our company has ever received. Interestingly, we have never tried to remove it. It serves as a reminder of an important lesson for us.
The biggest mistake was not made by the customer. It was made by us. We assumed that because someone appeared polite and trustworthy, no further precautions were necessary. We realised that good intentions are not enough. Clear procedures protect everyone. That single rental completely changed how Rentamania LTD operates today.
Following this experience, we introduced several important improvements:
Want to know exactly what's allowed before you drive? Our full rental agreement is public — and we'll explain every restriction before you sign.
Some people assume rental companies introduce strict rules simply to make more money. In reality, our experience has shown the opposite. Most rules exist because someone, somewhere, has already had a serious accident. Every restriction in our contract has a story behind it. Many are written in response to situations that could have ended far worse than they did.
If sharing this story prevents even one family from making the same mistake, then it has served its purpose.
Because standard rental insurance normally becomes invalid as soon as the vehicle leaves an asphalt road. Any resulting damage may become the customer's financial responsibility.
The route includes rough terrain, steep drops, narrow sections and difficult driving conditions. Local rental companies regard it as one of the highest-risk roads in Cyprus.
Many companies now install GPS systems, both for theft prevention and to help monitor vehicles entering dangerous areas.
The purpose is primarily deterrence. Repairs after repeated off-road use can cost thousands of euros, and the risks to customer safety are significantly higher.
Always read your rental agreement carefully, ask questions if anything is unclear, and never assume that a road shown by a navigation app is permitted under your rental contract.
Every rule in our contract has a story behind it — and this is the story behind many of them. We share it so your holiday in Cyprus ends the way it should: safely, and with great memories.
