By the Director and Owner of Rentamania LTD — more than 10 years in the industry.
If you've ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a successful car rental company in Cyprus, this article offers an honest look at a typical day during the busiest months of the year. Whether you're planning to rent a car in Paphos, comparing rental companies, or simply curious about how the industry works, this guide explains what really happens from morning until evening.
The high season runs approximately from April to October, while the low season lasts from November to March. During the high season:
For rental companies, every day becomes a carefully coordinated logistical operation.
My working day usually starts around 7:30 AM, when hotel restaurants open for breakfast. This is the moment when hotel receptions begin calling because guests decide they want to rent a car for the day. At the same time, enquiries start arriving through Google, WhatsApp and our website.
Between 9:00 and 10:30 AM, both of my phones are often ringing continuously. Alongside phone calls, I usually manage 15–20 WhatsApp conversations with customers every day.
One of the biggest changes we've seen over the past two years is how tourists choose rental companies. Previously, most guests simply asked the hotel reception for a recommendation. Today, an increasing number ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude: "What is the best car rental company near my hotel in Paphos?"
Several hotel partners have even told us that AI recommendations are gradually replacing traditional hotel referrals. For our company, this hasn't reduced bookings — it has simply changed where our customers come from.
People ask me this question all the time. Years ago, I tried delegating customer communication. Unfortunately, one employee copied business contacts and attempted to build a competing company using relationships developed while working with us. The business didn't last long — Cyprus, and especially Paphos, is a relatively small community where reputation spreads quickly. Trust is difficult to earn and very easy to lose.
That experience taught me an important lesson. The very first conversation with a customer often determines the entire rental experience. It builds trust. It prevents misunderstandings. It answers important questions before they become expensive problems. For this reason, I still personally answer many phone calls and WhatsApp messages.
Even today, when I occasionally travel during the low season and delegate customer communication, I usually spend several weeks afterwards resolving small misunderstandings that could have been avoided. In my opinion, customer communication should always be handled by the company's most experienced people — ideally the owner or director.
Between 9:00 AM and noon, our team focuses almost entirely on new reservations. Our staff speaks English, German and Russian, allowing us to communicate comfortably with visitors from many countries. During the busiest days, we complete a new rental approximately every 15 minutes.
Sometimes every manager is occupied, so I personally deliver vehicles, complete rental agreements and answer customers' questions. This remains my favourite part of the business. Helping visitors discover Cyprus safely — and preventing costly mistakes — is one of the reasons I still enjoy this work after more than ten years.
Want to talk to us directly? Message us on WhatsApp — during business hours we usually reply within minutes.
The second half of the day is dedicated to collecting vehicles from hotels across the Paphos region. Many customers simply leave the keys at hotel reception. Later, our team inspects the vehicle, releases any deposit or pre-authorisation (when applicable), and prepares the car for its next customer.
This system works because of mutual trust. If we ever discover a problem, we simply contact the customer and resolve it professionally.
Most people think a rental company simply hands over the keys. In reality, every day also includes:
In many ways, we spend almost as much time acting as local travel advisors as we do renting cars.
The best part of this business is meeting people from all over the world. Every customer has a different story. Some need help choosing the perfect beach. Others ask about mountain roads, local restaurants or hidden places that don't appear in guidebooks.
If my experience helps someone avoid an expensive mistake — or simply enjoy a better holiday — then my job has been worthwhile.
