One of the most common and most difficult situations we face involves customers driving rental vehicles into areas where driving is prohibited by the rental agreement. The most famous example is the Akamas Peninsula. Every year, despite clear warnings, some tourists still drive ordinary rental cars into Akamas and other off-road areas. After many years in the industry, we believe we understand why.
01 The Truth: These Are Some of the Most Beautiful Places in Cyprus
The prohibited areas are often among the most beautiful places on the island.
Avakas Gorge — one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Cyprus:
- a dramatic canyon landscape;
- small streams and seasonal waterfalls;
- dense vegetation and natural shade even in summer;
- exceptional walking opportunities.
Lara Beach — a protected area famous for:
- sea turtle nesting sites;
- crystal-clear water and natural beaches;
- opportunities to observe turtles while snorkeling.
Blue Lagoon — an iconic destination with exceptional water clarity, stunning scenery and excellent swimming and snorkeling. It is easy to understand why tourists want to visit these places.
02 Why Do Rental Companies Prohibit These Routes?
The reason is not that rental companies want to restrict customers. The reason is insurance. In Cyprus, standard rental vehicle insurance generally applies only to paved roads. Once a vehicle leaves an asphalt road and enters gravel, dirt, rocky tracks or off-road areas, the insurance coverage may no longer apply.
As a result, any damage may become the financial responsibility of the customer. Because of this, virtually all rental companies in Cyprus prohibit off-road driving.
03 So How Can You Visit Akamas Legally?

These vehicles and activities are specifically designed for such terrain.
04 Why Can't I Just Rent a Buggy and Go Alone?
In reality, many buggy operators in Cyprus do not allow completely independent off-road driving, preferring guided tours, organized groups and supervised routes. The reasons include customer safety, vehicle protection, insurance requirements and recovery logistics.
Only a small number of companies allow independent buggy use off-road, and these rentals often involve very high prices, security deposits of around €1,000 or more, and additional contractual obligations. As a result, some tourists decide to take a risk.
05 Why Do Some Tourists Still Take Ordinary Rental Cars Off-Road?
Because for many years, it often worked. Several years ago, some customers would rent a normal vehicle, drive into Akamas, return to the city, wash the vehicle and return it without consequences. For some people, this created the impression that the rules were not seriously enforced. Today, this assumption is no longer valid.
06 Almost All Rental Cars Now Have GPS Monitoring
Today, most rental companies in Cyprus have installed GPS tracking systems — encouraged by rental companies and by recommendations from local authorities and police. The reasons include:
- theft prevention and vehicle recovery;
- driver safety;
- accident investigation;
- emergency response.
Unfortunately, there have been serious accidents in the Akamas area, including cases where vehicles left the road and fell from cliffs. As a result, both authorities and rental companies have become much more cautious.

In many cases, yes. Modern GPS systems allow companies to determine vehicle location, route history, road type and duration of travel. This means attempts to conceal unauthorized off-road use are now much more difficult than they were several years ago.

The financial consequences can be severe. Depending on the circumstances, the rental company may cancel insurance coverage, impose contractual penalties and perform a technical inspection of the suspension, underbody, tyres and wheel alignment.

Not every case involves intentional misconduct. One of the most common causes is inadequate customer briefing — some companies do not sufficiently explain road restrictions or assume customers understand local conditions. But tourists cannot be expected to know every local rule. In our opinion, properly informing customers is one of the most important responsibilities of any rental company.
10 Can You Trust Google Maps in Cyprus?
Not completely. Navigation systems such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze do not reliably distinguish between asphalt roads, gravel roads and off-road tracks — they often calculate the shortest route. As a result, they may direct drivers onto roads unsuitable for ordinary rental vehicles. Never rely solely on navigation software in remote areas of Cyprus.
