Three companies offered to sell us their businesses — we declined all three. The Director of Rentamania LTD on why rental companies fail and how customers can spot a stable one.

DIRECTOR ADVICE Why Do Car Rental Companies Go Bankrupt in Cyprus? A Director's Perspective

By the Director of Rentamania LTD, Chloraka, Paphos.

Over the past few months, representatives of three different car rental companies approached us with offers to purchase their businesses. We respectfully declined all three.

Not because we are against growth, but because our long-term strategy is different. We prefer expanding our own fleet with carefully selected vehicles imported directly from Japanese auctions. Buying cars that have already spent years in rental fleets simply doesn't fit our standards.

Those conversations made me reflect on a question many customers never think about: why do some car rental companies fail while others continue to grow? I can only speak from my own experience running Rentamania LTD. Every business is different, but over the years we have noticed several recurring patterns.

01 Unsustainably Low Prices

Many new rental companies try to win customers by offering the lowest price on the market. Initially, this works. However, every rental company has significant fixed expenses:

  • office rent;
  • employee salaries;
  • accounting and legal services;
  • insurance;
  • vehicle maintenance;
  • depreciation;
  • financing costs.

If prices are consistently too low, there simply isn't enough profit left to absorb unexpected losses. Price alone does not build a sustainable business.

02 One Serious Incident Can Erase an Entire Season's Profit

Many customers don't realise that some types of damage are not covered by insurance. For example, driving on prohibited off-road roads or using a vehicle outside the rental agreement may completely void insurance coverage. When this happens, someone must pay for the damage.

If the rental company has no practical way to recover those costs, the financial loss remains with the business. For a small company, even one major incident can eliminate the profit from an entire season.

03 Financial Protection Matters

Some companies advertise: no deposit, no pre-authorisation, almost no financial guarantees. From a customer's perspective, these offers may sound attractive. From a business perspective, however, every rental carries financial risk. Without proper protection, repeated losses eventually threaten the company's survival.

04 Small Fleets Have Less Margin for Error

Fleet size alone does not determine service quality. Some small rental companies provide excellent service and are managed exceptionally well. However, smaller businesses usually have less financial flexibility. Unexpected repairs, cancellations or seasonal downturns have a much greater impact when fixed costs are spread across only a small number of vehicles. As a company grows, those costs become easier to absorb.

05 Tourism Is Constantly Changing

Every season brings new challenges. Demand depends on factors completely outside the control of rental companies:

  • geopolitical events;
  • airline schedules;
  • travel advisories;
  • exchange rates;
  • economic conditions;
  • changing tourist preferences.

Successful companies adapt. Others struggle to keep up.

06 How Can Customers Recognise a Financially Stable Rental Company?

While no method is perfect, customers should pay attention to several signs:

  • transparent contracts available before booking;
  • clear insurance explanations;
  • realistic pricing rather than "too good to be true" offers;
  • responsive customer support;
  • well-maintained vehicles;
  • clear policies regarding deposits, liability and payments.

Choosing solely by the lowest daily price often becomes more expensive later.

Looking for a stable, transparent rental company in Paphos? Our contract is public, our prices are realistic, and our fleet is imported directly from Japanese auctions.

07 Why We Didn't Buy Those Companies

Although several businesses approached us, we decided not to purchase them. Instead, we continue investing in carefully selected vehicles imported directly from Japan. This allows us to maintain consistent fleet quality and continue developing under our own brand and standards.

08 What We Believe Makes a Rental Company Sustainable

At Rentamania LTD, we believe long-term success is built on:

  • transparent contracts;
  • honest communication;
  • thorough customer instruction;
  • careful financial management;
  • maintaining financial reserves;
  • continuous investment in fleet quality;
  • steady, sustainable growth rather than aggressive expansion.

These principles may not always produce the lowest advertised prices, but they help create a stable business that customers can rely on year after year.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Are car rental companies in Cyprus under financial pressure?

Like many businesses connected to tourism, rental companies are influenced by changing market conditions. Some adapt successfully, while others choose to leave the market or sell their businesses.

Is the cheapest rental always the best option?

Not necessarily. Contract transparency, customer support, insurance conditions and company reputation are often more important than saving a few euros per day.

Why do some companies require deposits or pre-authorisation?

These measures protect both the company and its customers in situations where insurance does not apply or significant damage occurs. Policies vary between companies.

Why didn't Rentamania LTD buy the companies that approached you?

Because our long-term strategy focuses on building our own fleet and maintaining consistent quality rather than acquiring vehicles that have already spent years in rental service.

FINAL Key Takeaway

Car rental companies rarely fail because of one bad customer or one difficult season. In our experience, businesses usually encounter serious problems when several factors combine over time: unsustainable pricing, inadequate financial protection, insufficient reserves and an inability to adapt to changing market conditions.

Of course, every company has its own story, and these observations reflect our experience operating Rentamania LTD in Cyprus rather than universal rules. Our goal in sharing these insights is simple: to help customers better understand how the industry works and why choosing a reliable, financially stable rental company often matters far more than choosing the lowest advertised price.
