The Director of Rentamania LTD on why refusing a risky route can save thousands of euros — and lives. Honest advice on off-road safety in Cyprus.

DIRECTOR ADVICE Sometimes We Say "No" — And That May Be the Most Important Thing We Do for Our Customers

Advice from the Director of Rentamania LTD, based on more than 10 years in the Cyprus car rental industry.

One of the hardest parts of my job is disappointing a customer. A family arrives in Cyprus after waiting all year for their holiday. They have seen beautiful photos of the Blue Lagoon, Avakas Gorge, Lara Beach or the Akamas Peninsula, and they want to visit them all in a standard rental car. Then I have to say: "I'm sorry, but we cannot allow this route with this vehicle."

After more than ten years in this business, I have learned that saying "No" at the right moment can save our customers thousands of euros — and, more importantly, it can save lives.

01 We See a Different Side of Cyprus

Tourists usually see stunning beaches, mountain roads and breathtaking scenery. We see something else. We read accident reports. We receive calls asking for emergency assistance. We organize vehicle recovery. We speak with customers after serious incidents. We know how quickly an enjoyable holiday can turn into a tragedy.

02 The Beautiful Routes That Demand Respect

The roads leading to attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, Akamas Peninsula, Avakas Gorge, Lara Beach and Adonis Baths are among the most spectacular in Cyprus. They are also among the most challenging. These routes often include:

  • rough unpaved surfaces;
  • loose rocks;
  • deep ruts;
  • steep climbs and descents;
  • narrow sections with limited visibility;
  • cliffs with little or no protection.

These are not conditions for an ordinary passenger car — and often not conditions for an inexperienced tourist driver.

03 Serious Accidents Have Happened

Our policy is not based on assumptions. Over the past several years, serious accidents have occurred on roads leading to Akamas and the Blue Lagoon. Publicly discussed incidents in the region have included vehicles leaving the road on the route toward the Blue Lagoon, buggy accidents on the Baths of Aphrodite–Blue Lagoon road, and tourists seriously injured after a buggy went into a gorge in the Akamas area.

These incidents have repeatedly led to public discussion about restricting access to some of these roads and improving visitor safety. For us, they are an important reminder that beautiful places can sometimes be dangerous.

04 Why We Refuse Certain Routes

Some companies simply hand over the keys. We prefer to have an honest conversation. If we believe a planned route presents an unreasonable risk for both the customer and the vehicle, we will explain why. Sometimes we recommend another vehicle. Sometimes we suggest joining an organised tour. Sometimes we simply advise against making the trip. Occasionally, a customer decides not to rent a car at all — and we fully respect that decision. In fact, we often provide a complimentary transfer back to their hotel.

Our goal has never been to rent as many cars as possible. Our goal is for every customer to return safely.

Planning a trip to Akamas or the Blue Lagoon? Ask us first — we'll recommend the safe, legal way to get there.

05 Safety Is More Important Than One Rental

At Rentamania LTD, we prefer to spend time explaining which roads are safe, which are prohibited, how insurance works, where tourists most often make mistakes and how to avoid unnecessary risks. This conversation usually takes much longer than preparing the rental agreement itself — and we believe those extra minutes are one of the best investments we can make in our customers' safety.

06 If You Feel Uncomfortable, Trust Yourself

If, after hearing the explanation, you feel uncertain about driving a particular route, don't force yourself to do it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with changing your plans. No photograph is worth risking your holiday — or your safety.

DIRECTOR Director's Advice

During my years in this business, I have learned one simple lesson: the safest customer is not the one who is most confident. The safest customer is the one who is willing to ask questions, listen to advice and sometimes change their plans. If I tell you that a road is not suitable for your rental car, it is never because I want to limit your holiday. It is because I genuinely want you to enjoy Cyprus, return safely to your hotel, and remember this island for its beauty.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I drive a rental car to Blue Lagoon or Akamas?

Many access roads are rough, steep and unsuitable for ordinary passenger vehicles, and they may not be covered by your rental agreement or damage protection.

Why are these routes considered risky?

They combine difficult terrain, loose surfaces, steep drops and drivers who are unfamiliar with local road conditions.

Are these restrictions common?

Most responsible rental companies restrict at least some off-road routes. The exact policy differs between companies, so always ask before travelling.

Is Rentamania LTD just trying to sell a more expensive vehicle?

No. If we recommend a different vehicle — or advise against a trip altogether — it is because we believe it is the safest option based on our experience.
