DIRECTOR ADVICE Don't Try to Outsmart Your Rental Company

Advice from the Director of Rentamania LTD, based on more than 10 years in the Cyprus car rental industry.

Trying to outsmart your rental company almost always ends up costing far more than following the rules. Most customers are honest — well over 99% of our clients return their vehicles without any problems. The few difficult situations we encounter almost always begin with one decision: "Nobody will notice." Unfortunately, that's rarely true.

01 The Most Common Mistake

Some of Cyprus's most famous attractions — such as Lara Beach, Avakas Gorge, Adonis Baths and parts of the Akamas Peninsula leading to the Blue Lagoon — are reached by rough, unpaved roads. These routes are not suitable for ordinary passenger cars; they are intended for properly equipped 4×4 vehicles, licensed off-road tours, buggies or quad bikes.

Because renting this specialist equipment is more expensive, some travellers decide to take a standard rental car instead. Some believe they can simply wash the car afterwards and nobody will know. Others already know there is an off-road penalty and decide that paying it is still cheaper than renting the correct vehicle. Both assumptions are risky.

02 GPS Tracking Is Standard Practice

A few years ago, someone might have taken that chance. Today, the situation is completely different. Most rental vehicles in Cyprus are equipped with GPS tracking systems, widely used throughout the industry for vehicle security and recovery. Your rental company usually knows where the vehicle has been.

At Rentamania LTD, we believe in transparency, so GPS tracking is clearly explained in our rental agreement. Not every company highlights this as openly, but travellers should assume that modern rental vehicles are monitored. Trying to hide an off-road trip is no longer a realistic strategy.

03 The Real Cost Can Be Much Higher Than the Penalty

Some customers believe the only consequence is an off-road penalty. Unfortunately, reality can be much more expensive. One case from our own experience illustrates this perfectly. Despite being clearly advised not to leave paved roads, a customer drove towards the Akrotiri salt lake area and became completely stuck in the mud.

Recovering the vehicle required specialised equipment, and the recovery bill alone exceeded €2,000. The situation became more serious when environmental authorities imposed an additional ecological fine of €10,000 for driving into a protected area. One decision turned an ordinary sightseeing trip into an expense of approximately €12,000 — more than the value of many rental cars.

04 Rental Restrictions Exist for a Reason

Customers sometimes assume these rules exist simply to generate penalties. They do not. They exist to protect:

  • your safety;
  • your passengers;
  • the rental vehicle;
  • the environment;
  • and everyone involved in the rental process.

Many off-road routes in Cyprus are genuinely dangerous. Even experienced drivers regularly become stranded or damage vehicles on roads around the Akamas Peninsula and other remote locations. The restrictions are based on years of practical experience — not on theory.

05 We Want You to Enjoy Your Holiday

Our goal has never been to issue penalties — quite the opposite. Every accident avoided is good for our customers and good for our business. That is why we spend time explaining where you can drive, which vehicle is suitable for your planned route and how to avoid unnecessary risks. If we recommend a different vehicle, there is usually a practical reason behind it.

DIRECTOR My Advice After Thousands of Rentals

If there is one piece of advice I would give every traveller visiting Cyprus, it is this: respect your rental agreement, respect the vehicle, and ask questions if you are unsure. If your rental company advises against driving somewhere, don't assume they are trying to sell you something more expensive. In most cases, they are trying to save you from a very costly mistake.

Fortunately, almost every customer follows the rules, enjoys a wonderful holiday and returns home with nothing more than great memories of Cyprus. That is exactly how we hope every rental experience will end.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
