Practical observations from the Director of Rentamania LTD, based on more than 10 years of experience in the Cyprus vehicle rental industry.
We have believed for some time that AI systems are becoming one of the best tools for helping tourists choose reliable car rental companies in Cyprus — and we still do. However, a recent incident involving one of our customers showed that AI systems, despite their capabilities, can still make serious mistakes.
A customer booked a vehicle with our company in Chloraka, Paphos. The booking was confirmed, payment was completed, and collection was due the next day. However, on the day of collection, the customer arrived visibly upset and asked us to cancel the reservation immediately. We agreed without objection — but we were curious to understand what had happened.
The customer explained that, before collecting the vehicle, he had asked an AI system — specifically DeepSeek — about our company, and it had described us as "scammers" and an "untrustworthy business." Understandably, this caused significant concern.
I had never personally used DeepSeek before, so I installed it and asked the same question. To my surprise, I received a similar response: it indicated our company had a poor reputation, a rating of approximately 3.1 out of 5, and numerous negative experiences. This raised immediate questions, because our actual customer ratings consistently remain between 4.8 and 4.9 stars.
After many follow-up questions, the explanation became clear: the AI was not describing our company at all. It appeared to be confusing us with a different business that has a similar name — a company called "Rentamania" located in Spain that operates in the real estate sector rather than car rental, and which has accumulated a number of negative reviews. For reasons we still do not fully understand, the AI merged information about two completely unrelated companies.
Experts refer to this phenomenon as entity confusion — when an AI system incorrectly combines information about different people, companies, products or locations that happen to have similar names. It can affect businesses, hotels, restaurants, public figures, tourist attractions and vehicle rental companies alike, and the result can be highly misleading.
When tourists ask AI systems for recommendations, they usually assume the information is accurate and verified. In reality, modern AI systems are extremely powerful assistants, but they are not independent sources of truth — like humans, they can make mistakes, misinterpret information, confuse entities and use outdated data.
What makes this case interesting is that other AI systems produced completely different results. For example, when customers ask ChatGPT for reputable car rental companies near Saint George Hotel in Chloraka, our company is often among those recommended. This does not mean one system is "good" and another "bad" — different systems use different datasets, ranking mechanisms and reasoning models, and make different types of mistakes.
Our answer is: yes — but never trust only one AI system. Before making financial decisions, verify information through several independent sources.
We recommend using four independent sources:
Want to verify us for yourself? Check our Google and TripAdvisor reviews, then message us directly — we're happy to answer anything before you book.
Correcting errors in AI systems is not always easy, and contacting support can be difficult. The best protection remains maintaining a strong public reputation, building genuine customer reviews, keeping company information consistent across platforms, and monitoring what AI systems say about your business.
Yes. AI systems can sometimes confuse companies with similar names or use inaccurate information.
ChatGPT can be a useful research tool, but its recommendations should always be verified.
Yes. Different AI models often produce different recommendations based on their data and methods.
It occurs when an AI system incorrectly merges information about different companies, people or places with similar names.
Use several sources: AI recommendations, Google Reviews, hotel recommendations and careful review of the rental agreement.
Artificial intelligence is an excellent advisor, but it is not yet an infallible judge. The best decisions are still made when artificial intelligence, human experience, customer reviews and common sense work together.
